Social Innovation: B2E Cycle of Experimentation

The first two years of the Building to Electrification Coalition (B2E) consisted of convening, listening, learning, and acting to understand the complexities of accelerating the pace of adoption of building electrification in BC. By the spring of 2023, B2E had grown and evolved into a strong network, and staff determined that a more strategic approach, with a focus on activities that have the highest potential to make change, was needed. Recognizing that trying to do everything all at once is not possible, especially with the limited resources of support staff, the B2E network and committees needed to prioritize strategic and shared actions to move their collective work forward with the greatest impact.
In the spring of 2023, ZEIC began working with a Social Innovation Researcher in Residence, Dr. Lindsay Cole, to support this work. A structured cycle of experimentation with the B2E was initiated and focused on the question: “How might we structure, grow, and maximize the potential impacts of the member-based network model guided by the B2E Leadership Council with influential leaders from government, non-profit, and private sectors?” Using social innovation and systemic design approaches the B2E Leadership Council worked on complex, non-linear, uncertain challenges using cycles of experimentation and learning.
During the two years working with Dr. Cole, B2E went through five experiment cycles, which continue to influence and guide the current trajectory of the network. The key insights and reflections on this work can be found in this short report.
