B2E is Canada’s first building electrification coalition, based in British Columbia. We are a program area of the Zero Emissions Innovation Centre (ZEIC). We are industry experts, professionals, associations, training/education providers, engineers, designers, general contractors, installers, community housing providers, operators, owners, manufacturers, vendors, financial institutions, researchers, policy makers and electric utilities.

Our Purpose

Our purpose is to create opportunities for multiple stakeholders to work collaboratively to identify and address barriers to electrification and take actions that contribute to a meaningful and equitable market shift to decarbonizing BC’s building sector.

Our Goals

To advance high-efficiency electric space conditioning and water heating by:

  • Building demand,
  • Increasing the value of electrification,
  • Fostering supportive policy alignment,
  • Boosting the number of skilled workers, and,
  • Creating robust and responsive supply chains.

How We Work: B2E Theory of Change

The B2E Coalition is a network of leaders from all parts of the building electrification system in BC. We are working together to make significant contributions to decarbonize the building sector in BC by shifting the market toward electrification. We know that achieving this goal requires us to learn from each other's experiences, collaborate with each other, and actively find and implement solutions to the barriers that are inhibiting this shift.

We believe that we have the responsibility and agency to take individual, organizational, and collective actions that transform the equipment inside each building, maximize efficiency and reduce demand impacts, and utilize cleaner fuel sources. These actions require us to be agile and work together on multiple fronts at the same time in coordinated and aligned ways, including increasing building owner demand, shifting the culture of contractors and trades, encouraging greater product availability, improving affordability for everyone, and supporting policy and regulation.

We share our experiences and insights in a trusted space, learning from one another’s successes and setbacks. All of this work is in service of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from buildings in BC in ways that centre equity, and that support achievement of our climate targets from the local to international levels.

Our Theory of Change focuses on five areas:

  • Relationship Building
  • Information Sharing
  • Shared Language and Understanding
  • Peer Review & Consultation
  • Member Support & Funding

We recognize that building electrification is a long-term process that presents both challenges and opportunities for implementation. Our Theory of Change helps us navigate through the intricacies and ultimately achieve our vision.

The B2E Team at ZEIC

The B2E team at the Zero Emissions Innovation Centre (ZEIC) collaborates with industry, government, utilities, and other stakeholders to identify and address barriers to building electrification. As a convener and knowledge hub, B2E shares best practices and supports actions that accelerate the shift to low-carbon buildings. See the ZEIC team here

Governance

B2E Leadership Council

Purpose: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the building sector by providing strategic direction to the transition toward building electrification. Drawing from expertise within each member's sector, ensure that B2E activities address current challenges and take advantage of opportunities to accelerate building electrification as outlined in the BC BERM.

The B2E Leadership Council, on behalf of the over 140 B2E members, published this strategic priorities letter in Jan 2024 here >
